Japan: surfing will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020

40 surfers will qualify for Tokyo 2020

There will be 40 surfers competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) and the World Surf League (WSL) will determine all spots available for the sport’s Olympic debut.

The ISA will select 22 surfers through the 2019 and 2020 ISA World Surfing Games, and the 2019 Pan American Games; a single slot for men and women will be awarded to the host nation, i.e., Japan.

WSL will pick 18 male and female surfers via the Championship Tour.

The Olympic surfing competition will be held in Tsurigasaki Beach, Ichinomiya, Chiba Prefecture.
